The Haryana government is considering allowing foreigners to eat beef in the state, CM Manohar Lal Khattar said.In March 2015, the Haryana passed a law that made cow slaughter punishable with a fine of Rs 1 lakh and 10 years of rigorous punishment. This comes after Khattar was roundly criticised for saying Muslims can live in India if they abstain from beef. <!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Khattar was quoted by The Hindu as saying that eating beef wasn’t something they opposed but reflected the feelings of the people in state who didn’t want to eat it. However, a special licence for beef for foreigners working in the state could be considered. He said: “If we have to work out some facility for them foreigners to be able to consume beef… we will do it. It could be a special licence… as whatever is licensed, no one can oppose under the law. Everyone has a personal lifestyle for eating and drinking, especially those who come from abroad … we don’t have any opposition to that. In fact, we are not opposing this for anyone”Similar permits and licences are granted to foreign nationals in Gujarat where alcohol is banned. A former RSS man who spent 14 years with the organisation, Khattar has made controversial statements in the past, where he’s blamed women’s clothing for rape and described pre-marital sex as something that’s wrong and happens when boys and girls aren’t on the right track. In October 2015, Khattar had told The Indian Express that Muslims who wanted to live in India would need to give up eating beef. (Read: ML Khattar’s top foot-in-mouth comments)
