When the country’s much celebrated boxer MC Mary Kom stood to take oath as an MP in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, perhaps, the struggle ahead to have a berth in the Rio Olympics was playing on her mind.Soon after her name was announced for the coveted post, Mary Kom, also known as Magnificent Mary had made it clear that until she qualifies for the Rio Olympics, she is not going to think about her role as a parliamentarian.<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>”It was a great honour to be nominated for Rajya Sabha. It was a sudden development and I was surprised…I have not qualified for the Olympics yet and till I qualify for the Olympics, I am not going to think about what would be my role as a parliamentarian. If I do that, I will be putting pressure on me. So, my sole focus is now to qualify for the Rio Olympics,” said the mother of three without batting an eyelid.The somber presence of the simple tribal village girl from Manipur, who fought against heavy odds to win World Amateur Boxing Championship five times, united a badly divided Upper House for a few minutes.She received a thunderous applause from the whole House as soon as she finished taking oath and was greeted by the chairman of the Upper House, Vice President Hamid Ansari, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.True to her indomitable and focused spirit, Magnificent Mary did not waste much time in the parliament and perhaps knowing that she would be robbed by an eager media switched off her cell phone to go off the radar and get back to the boxing arena.
