‘The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree’ is a cliché often wheeled out in times like these. In this scenario, it seems most apt.

Bindeshwari Prasad Yadav, better known as Bindi Yadav, is now in the headlines for being the father of Rocky Yadav, who was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly shooting dead Aditya Sachdeva, a teenager on Saturday night for overtaking his car on the Bodhgaya-Gaya road. While on the topic of Rocky, it was only hours after ‘confessing’ to the crime that Rocky issued a quick retraction: “I didn’t shoot anyone. I was in Delhi and came because my mother called me,” he was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Bindi has been in the headlines in the past for as (if not more) sinister reasons. According to The Times of India, he was a once-dreaded don who has been accused in about two dozen serious criminal cases including those involving murder, kidnapping, dacoity and house-grabbing.

“In the nineties, Bindi alongwith underworld soulmate Bachchu Yadav created a reign of terror resulting in large scale migration of businessmen and other self respecting gantries and acute plummeting of real estate prices in posh Gaya colonies including AP Colony (sic),” said The Times of India report.

According to this 2001 report in The Times of India, Bindi was also involved in the case of kidnapping of businessmen Jai Kumar Jain and Babli Jain. Jai Kumar Jain was released for a ransom of Rs 10 lakh while Babli Jain was released for Rs 17 lakh.

Even in that 2001 report, it was mentioned that Bindi Yadav had already been jailed twice under the Crime Control Act.

In another article in DailyO, Kumar Shakti Shekhar wrote, “I have seen with my own eyes a cache of guns being loaded by his men in his SUV one morning, sometime between 2003 and 2005 during the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) rule. He lives in a house allegedly ‘captured’ during the 15-year rule of Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi from 1990.”

The article added that Bindi had been slapped with sedition charge in 2011 for storing 6,000 rounds of assault rifle bullets and giving them to Maoists.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Garima Malik, SSP Gaya, had said that Rocky Yadav had been arrested from a plant in Bodhgaya owned by his father.

After the news about his son’s alleged crime spread throughout the country, Bindi Yadav had also claimed that Rocky had fired from his pistol “by mistake”. Eye-witnesses, though, contradicted this claim and explained how Rocky Yadav had threatened them just because their car had overtaken his.

Bindi was arrested soon after Rocky Yadav had gone missing after the murder and was sent to 14 days in judicial custody on Monday by a Gaya court.
