On arriving in Khajuraho, your mind is filled with thoughts about what you’re about to see, the inscriptions, sculptures; the popular imagery about the place. But when you enter the various temples here, you’ll see the walls you expected to be covered in erotica, actually have engravings of day-to-day processes.
Desire here becomes a vague term, because it can be interpreted in more ways than one: an (excessive) need for sex, to achieving divinity via satisfaction. The things you learn from these walls and the metaphors inscribed on them are significant.
Here’s a 360-degree view of a little expedition we had at Khajuraho.
Don’t miss the last shot in the video: it comprises a rather recent construction (from the 19th century), which is meant to unify religions. A Hindu spire, a Jain cupola, a Buddhist stupa and mosque-style dome.
A virtual tour will only give you a glimpse at this land of mysticism. To witness it in reality, we suggest you pay a visit.
The only thing Khajuraho lacks, is connectivity. If it were to have better roads leading to its monuments, it would flourish as a tourist location.
