US rape victim: I’m not happy with Delhi police probe

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>An American woman who was gang-raped by five men at a hotel in April in New Delhi said that she was still not satisfied and confident about the probe being carried out by the Delhi police. The woman, who arrived in the capital last week to give her testimony in the case, said while she loves India, the police need to do more to make women feel safe. Speaking to DNA, the victim said: “I was drugged and raped by five men. I can identify each one of them. It was emotionally very traumatising to deal with things, post the incident. I was living in another country and hence dealing with laws in India was difficult. The process of filing the case was frustrating and I don’t feel confident of the way the Delhi police are dealing with the case,” she said.”The cops tell me that they are doing everything they can but I don’t feel assured,” she added. On the other hand, the police have claimed that the investigations were going on well and the alleged suspects have been identified.”The accused have been identified and have been questioned as well. The police are trying to gain clinching evidence. The Delhi police have high regard for the victim who has travelled back to this country to give her testimony in the case,” said Joint Commissioner of Police Dependra Pathak. The victim also said that when the tour agency and the hotel were informed about the incident, they were shocked but disinterested, bothering more about their own image, rather than trying to help her by finding out more details about the incident.”I don’t remember writing any positive feedback regarding the agency or the tour and travel company. I know there are other victims of these men as well. I will seek justice for what happened to me during my visit here,” she said.Terming coming to India was a “lifelong dream”, the victim said that she was very excited when she came to the country. “I still love the country but would want someone to come along when I come again. The problem in India lies with rape and violence which are issues that need attention. More needs to be done regarding tourists and rape laws in the country,” she said.”After the horrific December 16 gang-rape (Nirbhaya), there is still some amount of effort that needs to be taken in terms of policing,” she added. After undergoing a turmoil of emotions, she said that it was only by the end of July that she decided to take up the case and file an FIR. “My family and friends encouraged me to take up the case,” she said.

The incident occurred yesterday at 3:45 pm during the pre-commissioning phase, but inquiry has been ordered into the case, a DMRC official said. “A train, which was under complete control of Hyundai Rotem for commissioning, was moved perhaps inadvertently in reverse direction by the Rotem staff,” Delhi Metro Rail Corporation spokesperson Anuj Dayal said. The Delhi Metro currently spans an operational network of over 210 kms. Botanical Garden-Janakpuri West corridor (Line 8 or Magenta Line) is slated to become operational by next year. “There was no need to worry as it was in a depot, and one train just grazed against the other sideways. Also, the speed of the train was 2-3 kmph thus minimising the impact of the side-rubbing, and no one was hurt in the incident,” the DMRC official said. “Responsibility for the incident is of Rotem and prima facie it appears to be negligence on the part of the Rotem staff,” Dayal said. “However, a detailed inquiry is being conducted by Rotem to look into this lapse for suitable action,” he said.Hyundai Rotem, a South Korean company, is responsible for commissioning, among other carriages, the standard gauge cars of the Delhi Metro. “Our mainline train operations are fully safe and there is no scope of any such collision there due to provision of ATP (automatic train protection) and ATO (automatic train operation) during passenger services,” the official said. “These new trains are fully equipped to provide most reliable and safe service to public after commissioning even without train operators,” he said.

Coast Guard devises plan to conduct rescue operations in case of emergency landings

After two cases  of emergency landings in Mumbai waters, the Indian Coast Guard has reportedly devised an elaborate plan to conduct search and rescue operations in the event of crisis which causes aircraft water ditching in the sea.

Sources quoted by The Indian Express said that on 26 July, the Mumbai Air Traffic Control (ATC) intimated the Indian Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai, that the pilot of the flight Boeing 777-300 (EK 652) with 319 passengers on board, at a distance of 200 nautical miles (NM) reported smoke on the flight whilst on a passage from UAE to Maldives (Male).

The Indian Coast Guard had to divert two of its patrolling ships off West-South-West coast of Mumbai and stationed other vessels on standby, according to a report by The Hindu.

The report mentioned another incident occurred on 15 September when a Gulf Aircraft GFA 61 reported a burning smell on board when the aircraft was at least 200 kilometres off Mumbai.

The Coast Guard has set up an Incident Command System (ICS), which works closely with the state disaster group, to deal with any mass rescue operations.

Once an emergency is declared, they monitor the aircraft and move their ships simultaneously. The passengers also need urgent medical assistance once they have been rescued. The Coast Guard is ensuring that they are well prepared to conduct rescue operations during a mishap.

The Indian Coast Guard has played a major role in safeguarding the maritime interests of the country. Director General of ICG Rajendra Singh said that the changing security scenario in the maritime domain dictates the need for coastal security on a 24X7 basis.
