PM Modi set to be mascot of ‘Incredible India’ campaign; Tourism ministry plans to use radio, audio release

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to be the mascot of ‘Incredible India’ campaign with the Tourism Ministry finally deciding to do away with plans to rope in any Bollywood stars, including Amitabh Bachchan, for the role which was lying vacant after ouster of Aamir Khan earlier this year.No Bollywood actor will be engaged for the campaign aimed at attracting foreign travellers and video footages of Modi during the last two-and-a-half years where he has talked about tourism in India and abroad, will be used for the campaign, a senior ministry official said. The ministry is planning to use — for radio and audio release — two types of videos of different durations where Modi had talked about the uniqueness and diversity of the various places in the country, the official said.At present, the ministry is “working on selecting the footages”, the official said, adding that the campaign would be released in the next 40-45 days as the Indian ‘tourism season’ starts by November-end due to favourable weather as also the Christmas holidays and New Year celebrations. The official said the process of selecting the agency, which will carry out the task of running the campaign, is also under the process.Earlier, Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma had endorsed Modi’s persona for the role, saying he is the “best face” to promote Incredible India campaign. He had asserted that the country has witnessed a jump in the tourists inflow from the countries the Prime Minister had visited. He had said that the ministry need not have any Bollywood face for the campaign to attract tourists from overseas.”The perception about India has changed significantly in the last two years with Prime Minister Modi visiting a host of countries during the period. So, who else could be the better face for Indian tourism than our Prime Minister,” Sharma had said.Supporting Sharma’s remarks, a senior ministry official said tourist inflow from countries like the US, Germany, Fiji, Brazil, Australia, the UK, Canada and Myanmar, among others, has witnessed a significant jump after Modi’s visit to these nations.Earlier names of megastar Amitabh Bachchan and actress Priyanka Chopra were doing rounds for the campaign aimed at promoting India as a favourite tourist destination abroad after actor Aamir Khan’s ouster as the campaign’s brand ambassador.Though it was believed that Khan was eased out of the campaign in January after being associated with it for several years for his remarks on perceived intolerance, the Tourism Ministry had maintained that he was not hired by the government and that the contract with the advertising agency which engaged him had expired.

Priyanka Chopra may be Incredible India’s sole brand ambassador

Priyanka Chopra is on a roll – it’s been just a week since she got the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth highest civilian award, and now, from what sources say, she’s all set to become the sole brand ambassador for Incredible India, the government’s global marketing campaign to promote tourism in India. And what has tipped the scales in Chopra’s favour is her new international celebrity status – in January this year, the actor bagged the “favourite actress in a new TV series” award at the People’s Choice Awards the first south Asian actress to do so. The actress continued her run in the public eye when she became the first Indian to present an award at this year’s Oscars – the award for best editing. At home, she’s also had a good run with Bajirao Mastani, where her portrayal of the Maratha ruler’s first wife has her won critical acclaim and a few awards.<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>But it is her new status as an international icon, say the sources, could go a long way to reverse India’s image as a destination not safe for women tourists. As a woman and a known face in the West, her word would carry weight, so goes the reasoning in the government.Chopra’s name, along with that of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, had been doing the rounds as the new Incredible India brand ambassadors since January this year, though there had not been a formal announcement. However, the recent revelations about Bachchan’s alleged links with dubious offshore companies in Panama, seem to have led to a government rethink on his appointment as brand ambassador to the campaign, which the ministry now calls ‘Atulya Bharat’.Bachchan and Chopra were to have replaced Aamir Khan who had been the brand ambassador for the Incredible Indian campaign for a decade before his comments on the “rising intolerance” controversy had led to his exit from the role last year. The ministry had then refuted the controversy saying that McCann Worldgroup, the creative agency for the Incredible India campaign, had hired Khan, and that since the agency’s contract had ended so had the actor’s tenure as brand ambassador.Speaking to the media on the sidelines of an event in the capital on Tuesday, Union tourism minister Mahesh Sharma, however, refused to confirm that Bachchan’s name had been dropped, saying that his ministry was yet to take a decision on the issue.

Have not been formally approached for Incredible India, says Amitabh Bachchan

Mumbai/New Delhi: Amitabh Bachchan on Tuesday sought to put a lid on speculation that government is having second thoughts on engaging him for ‘Incredible India’ campaign after his name appeared in Panama paper leaks, saying he has not been “formally” approached for the task.

“There have been queries from the media regarding my being Brand Ambassador for ‘Atulya Bharat’ (Incredible India). I wish to state that I have not been formally approached for this position…The speculation of the media regarding its discontinuance is, therefore, not relevant as far as I am concerned,” Bachchan, 73, said in a statement.

His clarification came following reports that his name has been “put on hold for the brand ambassador’s role” after figuring in Panama papers, according to Tourism Ministry sources.

“His name would be considered only if he comes clean on the issue,” they added.

Bachchan’s name figured among 500 Indian individuals and entities who owned firms and accounts in offshore tax havens in the leaked documents of Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca. He has already denied any knowledge of the offshore firms, saying his name could have been misused.

“On the Panama disclosures, I wish to state that queries continue to be sent to me by the media. I would humbly request them to kindly direct these to the Government of India (GOI) where I, as a law abiding citizen have already sent, and shall continue to send, my responses.

“I stand by my earlier statement on the ‘misuse of my name’ in the matter and in any event the press reports do not disclose any illegal act committed by me,” he stated.

Bachchan and actress Priyanka Chopra were the frontrunners for the publicity of the campaign aimed at promoting India as a favourite tourist destination abroad after popular actor Aamir Khan ceased to be its brand ambassador following his intolerance remarks.

Not so ‘atulya’ any more? Amitabh Bachchan’s name put on hold for ‘Incredible India’

Even as megastar Amitabh Bachchan claims innocence in the recent Panama Papers revelations, the alleged scandal may have caused some damage to his reputation. The Hindustan Times has quoted sources as saying that the government has put his name on hold and is considering other celebrities to be the face of the campaign.

However, Bachchan’s name is not said to have been ruled out yet.

Speaking about the controversy, Bachchan had said, “I wish to reiterate that on the Panama Papers reportage…, I have not been a director on the Board of the 4 Companies as mentioned in an earlier report.”

“I am happy that the GoI has instituted a thorough investigation on this issue, for, I myself am keen to know how my name appears in connection with those 4 Companies,” the 73-year-old actor said.

The Congress had on Thursday demanded that Bachchan be removed as Maharashtra’s ambassador for the ‘Save Tiger’ project and as advisor for the development of BKC’s International Financial Centre after his name surfaced in the Panama Papers.

In January this year, news reports had suggested that Bachchan, along with actor Priyanka Chopra had been chosen as ambassadors for Incredible India. Bachchan was slated to replace Aamir Khan, who had been in a spot of controversy after his remarks on the debate over intolerance in India.

People should have freedom to eat what they want to, even beef: Amitabh Kant

New Delhi: Senior bureaucrat Amitabh Kant on Wednesday created a flutter by saying that in a democracy like India people should have the freedom of choice to eat what they want, including beef.

Kant clarified later that he was anwsering questions on start-ups at an event when he was suddenly asked about the beef controversy. “I gave a general reply about the practices in Kerala, my cadre state. That was the context,” he said.

Kant, who is Secretary in Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion in Government of India, had said, “Well, I believe we are in a democracy which allows people to decide what they want to say, which would allow people to decide what they want to eat.”

Asked at an NDTV event if that includes eating beef, he shot back, “of course. There should be freedom of choice. I said it in the context, the fact that I come from Kerala cadre, my neighbour was a Nair, my right hand neighbour was a Brahmin, they all ate beef. We all grew up eating beef in that state. There should be freedom of choice.”

Kant had also earlier said he was personally not in favour of banning beef exports, stating that the government should instead stay out of such areas and act as a catalyst for growth.

At the event, Kant, who is also the acting CEO of NITI Aayog, also took a swipe at Bollywood actor Aamir Khan whom he had countered on his remarks over climate of “intolerance” in the country.

“I think everyone should have the freedom to say what they want except when he is the brand ambassador of Incredible India,” he said.

Kant, a 1980-batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, had earlier said Aamir has damaged brand India while being brand ambassador of the celebrated ‘Incredible India’ campaign. Kant had been the key driver of the campaign.

Defending the exit of Aamir from the campaign, Kant had said the actor, by terming India an ‘intolerant country’, worked against his role as that of a brand ambassador.

“A brand ambassador promotes a brand. People will come to India and tourist flow will increase only if the brand ambassador of ‘Incredible India’ promotes the country as ‘incredible’. But if the brand ambassador says India is intolerant, he surely is not working as brand ambassador,”
Kant had said.

“The brand ambassador must be the best brand ambassador for promoting and marketing India, he cannot be the destroyer of the brand,” he had also said while replying to a query on removal of Khan from the campaign.

“Being a Brand Ambassador imposes responsibilities. U can’t run down what u’re promoting. That’s damaging d brand,” he tweeted.

Aamir had in November 2015 stirred a controversy after he expressed “alarm and despondency” over rising instances of intolerance in the country in the past few months and said that his wife (Kiran Rao) even asked if they should move out of India as she feared for safety of their children.

‘Never want to leave India’: Aamir Khan says comments on intolerance taken out of context

Bollywood star Aamir Khan says his statements on ‘intolerance’ last year which stirred more zing into an existing storm may have been taken out of context. At an awards night last year, Aamir Khan spoke about how his wife Kiran shared her worry about status quo in India and his quotes from that evening went on to roil the winter session of Parliament and never really died down.

Aamir Khan clarifies

Most recently, Amitabh Bachchan has replaced Aamir Khan as the brand ambassador of the Incredible India campaign.

Speaking at the 10 anniversary of “Rang De Basanti”, Aamir Khan attempted to clarify his statements on “growing intolerance”, reports The Indian Express.

“Some could understand me and some couldn’t. And those who are hurt, I can understand their feelings. I would have been hurt had I been in their place because they were told something that was not true,” Aamir Khan said.

Khan said his comments were taken out of context.

“Let me tell you that I never said that. I was born in India and I will die in India. I never thought about leaving the country. Neither Kiran nor will I think about it. In fact when I stay away from the country for two weeks I get homesick,” The Indian Express quotes Aamir as saying.

Aamir says his statement was not a generalization but more specifically certain people who are polarizing opinion one way or the other.

“Our Prime Minister has said unity is our strength and that one shouldn’t spread poison. I love my country and people who are spreading negativity, I with folded hands ask them not to do not. Unity in diversity is our main aim,” said Aamir.

“Why should I do Satyamev Jayate? It’s because I love my country. I feel happy that I am lending a hand in nation building. I belong to a freedom fighter’s family. My great grand uncle is Maulana Abul Kalam Azad,” he said.

Barely a week ago, senior bureaucrat Amitabh Kant, a key driver of the Incredible India campaign during his stint in the Ministry of Tourism, took a swipe at actor Aamir Khan saying that he is damaging India’s brand image when he calls India “intolerant”.

After speaking to television channels in Ahmedabad, Kant reportedly repeated his statement on Twitter Tuesday. “Being a Brand Ambassador imposes responsibilities. U can’t run down what u’re promoting. That’s damaging d brand,” he tweeted, reports The Indian Express.

Kant referred to Khan’s remarks at the Ramnath Goenka Awards night last November where Aamir Khan had said: “(Wife) Kiran and I have lived all our lives in India. For the first time, she said, should we move out of India? That’s a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make to me. She fears for her child.

She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers everyday. That does indicate that there is a sense of growing disquiet.”

“A brand ambassador must be the best ambassador for promoting and marketing India, he cannot be the destroyer of the brand… If the brand ambassador of India promotes it as Incredible India, then people will come here for sightseeing and tourist inflow will increase. But if the brand ambassador of Incredible India says that India is intolerant, then he is not working as the brand ambassador, he is damaging the brand entity of the nation, then people won’t come here,” Kant said.

Ram Madhav takes dig at Aamir Khan, says actor should preach his wife about country’s prestige

BJP leader Ram Madhav on Thursday denounced actor Aamir Khan’s remarks on ‘intolerance’, saying he should not preach only to an auto-rickshaw driver about country’s prestige but also his wife.Madhav also said the government will ensure that in future no need arises for ‘award-wapasi’, and asserted that there will be no compromise on the security of the country’s borders and self respect. In an apparent dig at Khan, who recently courted controversy over his remarks on perceived intolerance in the country, Madhav said, “It will not work that you preach to an auto wallah how country’s prestige has to be saved but not tell the same to your own wife”.<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The Bollywood superstar was the ambassador for the government’s ‘Incredible India’ tourism campaign during the UPA regime. He ceased to be the mascot for the campaign as the contract for it expired.Madha , who was addressing students at Delhi University’s SGBT Khalsa college, said “No one needs to return the awards, everyone will be taken care of but the country should be respected. The individuals should also take care of nation’s prestige.””We are dedicated to the security of the country. We want good relations with our neighbours. But with regard to the security of the country’s borders and its self-respect, no compromise will be accepted…we will take care that no need arises to return awards years later,” he said. Maintaining that in articulation of dreams for the country sometimes one can be “politically incorrect” too, the BJP leader at the same time said, “We feel painful that we are living in such an atmosphere that we cannot see dreams, you cannot talk four good things about the country’s future as it has to be politically correct…it has to be secular…” Madhav said Swami Vivekananda had asserted in his address in Chicago that Indian’s not only tolerate but also “accept” and “validate”. “Every American citizen is respected because of his country’s image in the world. Similarly, we want to make India an honourable nation. Not that the honour of our citizens is not our concern…our main aim is to bring honour to India across the world. “There is no need of award wapsi. You do not safeguard your country like that. Every citizen should be respected here and if anything wrong happens, that will be taken care of,” he said. The BJP leader said ever since Narendra Modi took over as the Prime Minister, the image of the country has improved globally. “The Narendra Modi government is fighting decisive battle against poverty in the country. We are determined to eradicate this menace,” he said. Madhav further said both his party and the government advocate “development for all”, which is why the PM always endorses “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”.He pointed out that the Centre’s initiatives on education and skill development will benefit 19 crore youths belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. “Our goal is to ensure security, prosperity, respect and equality for every citizen of India. We are responsible to the people of India and our objective is to bring about a positive change in the country,” Madhav added.

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen praises Arvind Kejriwal’s Odd-Even scheme

Drawing a sketchy comparison between the pollution and air quality between the Indian and the Chinese capitals, he said, “I think the difficulty is certain types of pollution are easy to see like the one in Beijing.” “Unfortunately in Delhi, we have had the kind of pollution which is not easy to see and so it generates a sense that it is not there. We certainly have fog but not the kind of thick smog that Beijing has even though our air is probably worse than that, in many ways definitely worse than that,” he said.

Rajasthan govt accepts dalit IAS officer’s VRS application

The application of Salodia, who was due to retire in June, 2016, was accepted with effect from March 31, 2016, according to the order issued by department of personnel of the state government today. A 1978 batch officer Salodia wrote to Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje expressing disappointment for purportedly being overlooked for the post of chief secretary and alleged that he was victimised because of his Schedule Caste origin.

Prosecution to examine David Headley in 26/11 case

The court had, on December 10, made Headley an approver, granting him pardon. Headley, currently serving a 35-year prison sentence in the US for his role in the Mumbai terror attack of 2008, had told the special judge G A Sanap (as he appeared from an undisclosed location in the US via video link), that he was ready to depose if given pardon. LeT operative Abu Jundal is now on trial in the 26/11 case. <!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>
