Mumbai: Indrani Mukerjea, prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, on Tuesday performed the post-death rituals for her father at Brahman Seva Samiti hall here and returned to the Byculla Women’s prison in the evening.
The special CBI court in Mumbai had last week granted her permission to perform the rituals anywhere in Mumbai. The court, however, had rejected her plea for interim bail to visit her hometown, Guwahati, for the purpose, following her father Upendra Bora’s death on 15 December.
Indrani left jail at around 7.30 am today with a police escort for Brahman Seva Samiti hall in Mulund. After
performing rituals there till 4.30 pm, she visited a nearby temple for prayers for an hour, a police officer said.
Judge HS Mahajan had said in his order that she shall not speak to media during the time she was out of the prison.
She shall be brought back to jail by 7 pm, the judge had said.
CBI had opposed Indrani’s request for interim bail to visit Assam. It had produced an e-mail sent by her son
Mikhail, which said he did not want her to visit Guwahati.
Indrani’s intention was to influence prosecution witnesses and there was also a possibility that she would try
to escape, CBI said.
Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and her former driver Shyam Rai are accused of killing Sheena, her daughter from an earlier relationship, in April 2012. Her husband and former media baron Peter Mukerjea too has been arrested in the case for being party to the conspiracy.

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Former media baron Peter Mukerjea, arrested in Sheena Bora murder case with his wife Indrani, on Friday filed an application in the CBI court in Mumbai seeking permission to use a laptop in the prison so he could write his autobiography.”I want to write an autobiography and for that I want a laptop without Internet in the jail,” Peter told the special CBI court judge H S Mahajan during the hearing on Friday. In a handwritten application, Peter also said he was finding it very difficult to write in long-hand.If allowed, he would work on the laptop for four hours a day and afterwards hand it back to jail authorities, the application said. “(I am) 61 years old and suffering from occasional memory fatigue and laptop will be of great help to aid in continuing the work without locating details during the writing and scripting process,” Peter said in the application. He also applied for permission to go to Bangalore to attend the wedding of his niece.CBI is likely to file its reply to his applications on December 14. The court is likely to hear arguments on framing of charges in the Sheena Bora murder case on December 19.Interestingly, the court had at the last hearing granted the prime accused in the case Indrani Mukerjea’s application seeking permission to deposit some demonetized currency notes in the bank (through someone outside the jail).Indrani, her former driver Shyam Rai (who has turned approver in the case) and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna are accused of killing her daughter Sheena inside a car in April 2012. Peter is accused of being party to the conspiracy.
Mumbai: In a significant revelation in the wake of the Central Bureau of Investigation questioning the senior IPS officer Rakesh Maria in the Sheena Bora murder case, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said the former Mumbai police commissioner had stated that the media baron Peter Mukerjea was not guilty.
Maria was shunted out as Mumbai police chief last year in the middle of Sheena murder probe which he was supervising personally. It was speculated that the government was not happy that he was taking so much interest in the case.
CBI later took over the case and arrested Peter Mukerjea.
According to the charge sheets filed in the case, Peter’s wife Indrani Mukerjea, her former spouse Sanjeev Khanna and her ex-driver Shyamvar Rai strangled Sheena, her daughter from another relationship, in April 2012.
All three were arrested by police; Peter was arrested by CBI later.
“During a police briefing, Maria came to us and said Peter is not guilty. And now we find CBI has made him an accused. CBI is investigating on the lines that Peter is part of the conspiracy,” Fadnavis, who handles the home portfolio himself, said.
“It is something to think about as to how a police officer who was deeply involved in the case thought this way,” Fadnavis said, speaking to reporters at his official residence ‘Varsha’ in Mumbai on Saturday.
CBI earlier this week questioned Maria, now Maharashtra’s Director General (Home Guards); Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner (Law and Order); and Satya Narayan Choudhary, Deputy Commissioner of Police, because they were part of the initial probe team.
Expanding the scope of investigation in the Sheena Bora murder case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday quizzed three Mumbai Police officials, including former city police commissioner Rakesh Maria.
Maria, who is currently DG Home Guards, was the then police commissioner heading the murder case. Apart from Maria, Joint Commissioner of Police Deven Bharti, and DCP Satyanarayan Chowdhury were also examined by the investigative agency.
The 24-year-old Sheena was strangled in a car in Mumbai in April 2012 allegedly by Indrani, Khanna and Indrani’s former driver Shyamvar Rai. Sheena’s body was then dumped in a forest in neighbouring Raigad district.
The case came to light only last year when Rai was arrested in another case. Rai later turned approver in the murder case.
Maria had reportedly shown personal interest in the case and had himself interrogated the accused including Indrani Mukerjea and Sanjeev Khanna, which is unusual.
Maria was, however, removed from his post as the city police commissioner and promoted as Director General of Home Guards with immediate effect.
It should also be noted that Maria was scheduled to be transferred or promoted on 30 September 2015. His promotion came 22 days ahead of schedule, indicating that it perhaps had something to do with the case.
While several television reports suggested that Maria’s removal was directly related to his involvement in the probe in the high-profile murder case, the Maharashtra Home Department held the changes were made taking into account the law and order factor ahead of last year’s Ganpati festival.
“There was no hurry in transferring Maria. It would have been inappropriate to transfer him on 30 September, in the middle of the festive season as Ganapati festival, a very important event in Maharashtra would be on at that time. Therefore, we decided to advance the promotion of Maria,” Additional Chief Secretary (Home) KP Bakshi said.
According to the CBI charge sheet, Indrani and Peter were against the “intimate relationship” between Sheena and Rahul, Peter’s son from his first wife. He often used to quarrel with Rahul on the issue as he didn’t approve of the relationship between Sheena and his son.
As per the charge sheet, Peter always dissuaded Khanna’s daughter from Indrani, Vidhie from having any contact with Rahul and Sheena.
Peter was initially fine with the relationship between Sheena and Rahul believing it would wane eventually over financial pressures.
In its charge sheet filed on 19 November 2015, CBI had named Indrani, Khanna and Rai as accused in the case.
Peter was arrested on 19 November 2015 for his alleged role in the murder plot. A charge sheet was filed against him by CBI on 16 February 2016.
With inputs from agencies
A supplementary charge sheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday asserted that former media baron Peter Mukerjea was indeed aware of the murder of Sheena Bora. The report also confirmed property angle in the 2012 murder case. Arguments on framing of charge are set to begin on Saturday.
According to CNN-News18, CBI has asserted that though “Peter was not in India when the murder took place, he was part of the conspiracy.” The charge sheet, third in the case, also said that the investigation has thrown up evidence that “Indrani was in touch with him while she was doing the recce of the place to dispose of her body, and after the disposal of Sheena’s body,” the TV news channel said on Friday.
The charge sheet also asserts that unlike what Peter has been stating, he was against the relationship between his son Rahul and Sheena citing an email conversation between the accused and Rahul.
The charge sheet also throws light on how Sheena and Rahul were separated by Indrani and how Indrani brought Sheena to Mumbai under the pretext of financial assistance, TimesNow said on Friday. “The charge sheet gives details of the relationship between Indrani and Sheena citing few email and SMS exchanges between the two,” it said.
According to the news channel, the charge sheet for the first time also confirms property angle in the murder. “It has brought out in the open details of financial transactions, and wills of Ridhie and Sheena Bora that were not raised by Indrani,” the news channel said. Moder details on the evidence are expected to surface when the case goes on trial.
Sheena (24) was strangled in a car in Mumbai on April 2012 allegedly by her mother Indrani Mukerjea, Indrani’s former husband Sanjeev Khanna and her former driver Shyamvar Rai. Sheena’s body was then dumped in a forest in neighbouring Raigad district.
There had been two charge sheets filed in the case so far. According to the first charge sheet filed on 19 November last year, the CBI had named Indrani, Khanna, and Rai as accused in the case. The trio was arrested in August last year after Rai spilled the beans while he was being interrogated in a case pertaining to illegal possession of arms.
Rai later turned approver in the case. According to investigators, Sheena’s relationship with Rahul, son of Indrani’s current husband and former media baron Peter Mukerjea, was the possible motive behind her murder apart from certain financial dealings. The second charge sheet was filed on 16 February against Peter for his alleged role in the murder plot. He was arrested on 19 November last year.
The agency had stated Sheena was killed as her relationship with Rahul was disapproved by Peter and Indrani both of whom were part of the plot to murder her. However, Peter had denied the allegations. He had cited his emails to prove that he was never against the relationship.
The investigation agency had informed the Bombay High Court of the charge sheet on 17 October. According to a PTI report, the trial on the case is expected to begin in the first week of December. The high court had given the CBI one month’s time (November) to comply with formalities, PTI reported on 17 October.
Shyamvar Rai, who recently turned approver by a special CBI court, has claimed that Indrani Mukerjea, the main accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, had strangled her daughter inside a car on 24 April, 2012, reported Times Now.
In his 12-page statement to the magistrate, Rai gave details of events leading up to Sheena’s murder. “Indrani asked me to stop the car. Khanna got into the backseat. I was asked to cover Sheena’s mouth, while Indrani strangulated her.”
Indrani’s assistant had asked Rai to take three months severance pay, an amount paid to an employee on the early termination of a contract, and leave, claimed the 12-page statement, as reported by Times Of India.
According to India Today, Rai had also revealed that Indrani planned the murder well in advance and visited the location of the murder, a day before. On the day of disposing Sheena’s body, Indrani and Khanna strategically made Indrani’s murder look like suicide by immolation.
On reaching the spot of murder, Indrani, Khanna and Rai brought Sheena’s body out of the car and Indrani threw gloves and a saree on her daughter’s body, the India Today report added. Rai then said that Khanna sprinkled petrol over Sheena’s body and Indrani set the body on fire.
Nowhere in his testimony has Rai made any allegations against Peter Mukerjea, confirmed a lawyer, reported The Times Of India.
A special CBI court on 20 June had made Indrani Mukerjea’s former driver Shyamvar Rai, an approver in the Sheena Bora murder case along with granting him a pardon.
Earlier, on 11 May, Rai had sought to turn approver, saying he wanted to “disclose all truths” as he had taken part in Sheena’s killing by strangulation and was present at the time of the murder in 2012.
Recording his statement before a special CBI court then, Rai had said he was under “no pressure, threat or coercion” to reveal the facts in the case and was “repentant” about his act.
Rai was the first accused to be arrested in the Sheena Bora murder case in August 2015.
Mumbai: The CBI probing the Sheena Bora murder case sought more time, on Tuesday, to file its reply on the desire expressed by prime accused Shyamvar Rai to turn approver in the case. Rai is Indrani Mukerjea’s former driver
The Special Judge HS Majahan adjourned the case until 6 June after special CBI prosecutor Kavita Patil sought more time.
Rai had on 11 May sought to turn approver, saying he wants to “disclose all truths” as he had taken part in the crime.
He had also written a two-page letter to the court seeking pardon. The agency had earlier sought time till today to file its reply.
Rai was the first accused to be arrested in the case in August 2015.
The murder came to light after Rai was picked up in connection with an arms case and later spilled the beans on the crime.
He had, last year, recorded his confessional statement before a magistrate under section 164 of CrPc, which unlike the police statement is admissible in the trial.
Indrani, her husband and media baron Peter Mukerjea, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna, and Rai are accused in the case.
Sheena (24), Indrani’s daughter from earlier relationship, was strangulated inside a car in April 2012. Her body was found in a forest in Raigad.
The crime is allegedly linked to certain financial dealings.
Indrani, Khanna and Rai were arrested in August last year and Peter in November. According to the CBI, Peter was part of the murder conspiracy.
While Peter (59) and Khanna are lodged in Arthur Road prison, Indrani (43) is in Byculla womens’ jail and Rai in Thane jail.
Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, had told her step-son Rahul that Sheena spoke to her only when she wanted money, according to a transcript accessed by CBI.”The only reason she contacted me basically because she wanted money… There was no other reason that she wanted to contact me,” Indrani told Rahul in one of their telephonic conversations after Sheena disappeared which he recorded.<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Rahul, who was engaged to Sheena, had started recording conversations with Indrani after he began to distrust her.Indrani also told him she had not seen Sheena after 9.15 pm on April 24, 2012 (the day she was murdered).Rahul, who kept trying to get information about Sheena after her sudden disappearance, was convinced at one point that Indrani knew about her whereabouts.”Indrani has got Sheena’s phone number and she found her. Indrani had her number all along… Indrani had cooked up a plan with Sheena,” Rahul told Peter Mukerjea, his father.Peter, who is married to Indrani, told him that he had spoken to Sheena after April 24, but all she said was “I am fine.”Peter was arrested on November 19 last year for his alleged role in the murder conspiracy. Before that police arrested Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and her driver Shyamvar Rai.Sheena (24), Indrani’s daughter from an earlier relationship, was allegedly strangled in a car and her body was disposed of in a forest in Raigad district. CBI has said that the motive behind the murder was related to financial transactions.
Mumbai: The makers of the yet-to-be-released Bengali film Dark Chocolate, which is based on the Sheena Bora murder case, on Wednesday told the Bombay High Court that it was based on the information available in the public domain and there was no scope for defamation.
A division bench of Justices SC Dharmadhikari and GS Patel was hearing a petition filed by former media baron Peter Mukerjea, one of the arrested accused in the case, opposing release of the film on the ground that it would violate his fundamental right to free and just trial.
The director of the film Agnidev Chatterjee and the producers on Wednesday filed their reply which said Mukerjea’s claim that he would not get a fair trial if the film was released casts aspersions on the integrity of the judiciary itself.
“Since the case information is in public domain, there is no cause for defaming the accused,” the affidavit said.
Chatterjee had earlier informed the court that the film’s shooting was over and the post-production work was going on.
The court had at the last hearing asked the producers not to release anything other than the already-released online trailer till further orders.
The hearing was adjourned till the next week.
The film stars Mahima Chaudhry in the role of Indrani Mukerjea and Riya Sen as her daughter Sheena.
Indrani, the prime accused in the case, allegedly killed Sheena in April 2012 in a conspiracy with others, but the murder came to light only last year.
Mumbai: CBI is separately probing the financial angle in the sensational Sheena Bora murder case in which former media baron Peter Mukerjea and his wife Indrani are among the accused, a top agency official said on Tuesday.
“We are separately probing the financial angle in the Sheena Bora murder case,” the official said.
Besides Peter and Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and ex-driver Shyam Rai are also accused in the case, in which the central agency has filed two chargesheets.
All accused are in jail under judicial custody.
Sheena, Indrani’s daughter from an earlier relationship, was murdered on 24 April, 2012 and her body was burnt before it was dumped in a forest in adjoining Raigad district of Maharashtra.
The murder came to light in August 2015 and it was initially probed by Mumbai Police before being handed over to CBI in September.
In the second chargesheet filed in mid-February, CBI claimed that the 24-year-old was killed as her father and Indrani strongly disapproved of her relationship with Peter’s son Rahul. Both Peter and Indrani were part of the murder plot, it said.
Sheena was working with Mumbai Metro before she went missing in April 2012.
The first chargesheet was filed on 19 November by CBI and it named Indrani, Khanna and Rai as accused. The document, running into more than 1,000 pages and containing statements of 150 witnesses, 200 documents and seven statements recorded before a magistrate, was submitted before Magistrate RV Adone at Esplanade court in South Mumbai.
The same day Peter was arrested for his alleged role in the murder and his name figured in the second document. He was in CBI custody for two weeks before being sent to judicial custody.
The second chargesheet did not mention details of the financial transactions and the agency had then indicated it may submit another document in future.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday filed a chargesheet against former media honcho Peter Mukerjea, who has been arrested in connection with the Sheena Bora murder case.A special CBI court had last week rejected his bail plea, observing that investigation in the matter was still on. Mukerjea’s bail plea will now be considered after the chargesheet. The media honcho was arrested on November 19 for his alleged role in the murder conspiracy in which his wife Indrani Mukerjea is the prime accused.<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>The 59-year-old was questioned by the CBI for two weeks after which he was remanded in judicial custody and sent to the Arthur Road Jail.
A local court in Mumbai on Thursday allowed CBI to question afresh Indrani Mukerjea and two other arrested accused in the Sheena Bora murder case.”We want to question Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and her driver Shyam Rai in jail,” said a CBI official.Judge H S Mahajan of the special court for CBI cases granted the agency’s plea. The Esplanade magistrate’s court, however, directed CBI to produce the order of the sessions court (special CBI court) for obtaining a similar order for Peter Mukerjea, Indrani’s husband, who was arrested later in the case. CBI in its plea said the facts disclosed by Indrani and two others needed to be “checked and verified” with Peter.<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>”The magistrate’s court directed CBI to produce the order of the sessions court and reserved its order (on questioning Peter) till tomorrow,” said Peter’s lawyer Kushal Mor.CBI has not yet filed charge sheet against Peter, so his case has not been transferred to the special CBI court. Indrani Mukerjea (43), Sanjeev Khanna and Shyamvar Rai have been chargesheeted. All the four accused are now in judicial custody.Sheena (24) was murdered in April 2012 and her body was burnt and dumped in a forest in Raigad, 84 kms from Mumbai. Sheena was Indrani’s daughter from an earlier relationship.CBI, which took over the probe from the Mumbai police, has claimed that the motive behind the murder had to do with financial transactions.
A magistrate’s court in Mumbai on Monday extended the judicial custody of former media baron Peter Mukerjea, arrested in the Sheena Bora murder case, till January 25. He was produced before magistrate R V Adone after the earlier judicial remand expired.Peter’s family members as well as Vidhie Khanna (daughter of Indrani Mukerjea from her earlier marriage with Sanjeev Khanna) were present in the court. Peter’s lawyer Kushal Mor sought permission for family members to meet him, which the court granted.Peter, 59, whose wife Indrani Mukerjea is the prime accused in the case, was arrested on November 19 for alleged role in the conspiracy.
