More trouble for Kejriwal: AAP candidate among 14 booked for land-grabbing case in Punjab

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Fourteen people, including an AAP candidate for the next year’s state polls, have been booked in an alleged land-grabbing case here, police said today. Cases have been registered against 14 people, including AAP’s candidate from Ferozepur (Urban) Narinder Singh Sandha, in a two-year-old complaint by former Congress MLA Ravinder Singh alias Babbal, they said. Babbal had lodged a complaint with the police to investigate the matter regarding the alleged grabbing of a Waqf Board land adjacent to city police station which was earlier used for the residence of SHO and DSP.”I had come to meet the SHO and DSP for public related works at the place but was shocked to see some showrooms coming up at the location,” the complainant said, adding “certain people” had reportedly got the land allocated in their names and sold it further.”The land for a very long time housed the residence of SHO and DSP and till 2000, the police department paid rent for it to the Wakf board,” police said. However, later an SHO set up a traffic post here and the accommodation was reduced to a ramshackle, police said.”After investigations the police yesterday registered cases under relevant sections of the IPC against more than dozen persons. However, I do not know if any of them is an AAP candidate,” SSP Ferozepur R K Bakhi said.Sandha alleged the case against him was filed at the behest of the ruling dispensation as the complainant was a “close relative of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal”.”I have already given all evidence and supporting documents to the police,” he said, adding SAD and Congress were trying to implicate AAP leaders in false cases fearing defeat in the ensuing polls.Meanwhile, AAP’s Ferozepur coordinator Pankaj Ranga said the case seemed politically motivated. However, if there is any substance in it the party will surely take cognisance of the same, he added.

Amarinder flays SAD, AAP for raising 1984 riots ahead of elections

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh on Thursday accused the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of trying to gain “cheap” political mileage by raking up 1984 anti-Sikh riots.Addressing a press conference, he said he owed no explanation to anyone much less Akalis, who had never raised the issue even once despite being in power, till it was election time in the state. “AAP had also chosen election time to raise the issue, with the clear intent of making political gains,” he said, dismissing the charges of protecting the guilty of riots. Singh said he had resigned as an MP in 1984 in protest against “Operation Bluestar” and personally visited several gurudwaras and other places to meet the riot victims for four days.To a question about the alleged role of Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in the anti-Sikh riots, the PCC president said the matter was sub-judice and it was for the court to establish whether he was guilty or not. He said that when he met the victims immediately after the riots, nobody named Tytler and his name cropped up only six months later during the Delhi elections. Singh demanded from SAD an explanation on why the NDA government, of which it is a constituent partner, had failed to do anything in the matter despite being in power. To a question on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue, he said he would resign from Lok Sabha and all party MLAs will quit the state Assembly if the pending Supreme Court judgement went against the interests of Punjab. Accusing Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal of allegedly putting the state on the back foot due to his inability to have the case properly defended in court, he said Parkash Singh Badal-led Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) had been indulging in double standards over the issue.Accusing Badal of “shedding crocodile tears” when the case was at its culmination stage in the apex court, after having earlier brought the state to its knees by selling off its interests to Haryana, Singh said “There was enough documentary evidence to show Badal s complicity against the interest of Punjab”.Replying to a question about his opposition to Punjabi Suba movement, the PCC chief said he had opposed it right from the day one. He alleged that the Akalis had a single point agenda of making Punjab a “Sikh majority” state and in the process, had compromised on precious resources like land, water and hydro- electric power.

Navjot Kaur Sidhu resigns from primary membership of BJP

Chandigarh: BJP MLA from Punjab Navjot Kaur Sidhu on Saturday resigned from the primary membership of the party, less than a month after her husband Navjot Singh Sidhu had also done so.

Her resignation was accepted by Union minister Vijay Sampla, who is also Punjab BJP president, and state BJP secretary Vineet Joshi.

Earlier in the day, she sent her one-line resignation to the party president at the party headquarters.

“I hereby resign from the primary membership of the party,” Joshi quoted Kaur as saying in her resignation letter.

He said one of her aides came to Punjab BJP headquarters here this evening and delivered the letter.

However, one of Kaur’s aides, claimed that she has not resigned as an MLA.

She will address a press conference in Amritsar on Sunday to give reasons of her resignation, the aide said.

Kaur, who was former chief parliamentary secretary (Health), had been at loggerheads with the SAD-BJP led government in the state over the development projects in Amritsar.

She had accused the government of meting out “step-motherly treatment” to her constituency (Amritsar-East) and had even observed a hunger strike in protest against alleged blockade of funds by it last year.

However, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had said Kaur was “like his daughter” and maintained that he had “liberally allocated funds” for development projects in her constituency.

Kaur had also announced that she will not contest polls as long as BJP remained an ally of SAD.

After her husband and cricketer-turned-politician Sidhu along with former hockey captain Pargat Singh and independent MLAs Simarjeet Singh and Balwinder Bains floated “Awaaz-e-Punjab”, she had said she would join the front team if they form a political party.

However, Sidhu after much speculation announced that he would not float a party to contest the upcoming Punjab Assembly election, as he did not wish to play a “spoilsport” by dividing anti-incumbency votes. He, however, said the forum was ready to “forge an alliance with AAP or Congress for the betterment of Punjab”.

Punjab Elections 2017: Former AAP convener Chhotepur floats ‘Aapna Punjab Party’

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>More than a month after he was sacked as Aam Aadmi Party’s Punjab convener, Sucha Singh Chhotepur on Saturday floated a regional political outfit ‘Aapna Punjab Party’ which will fight in the 2017 Assembly polls in the state. He also announced that a ‘Punjab Progressive Alliance’ will be set up soon, comprising of like-minded parties and people which will jointly contest elections in all 117 Assembly seats. Chhotepur, who gave his resignation from AAP yesterday, said floating of a regional party was the “need of the hour” after national parties like Congress, BJP, AAP and regional party SAD “failed” to take care of the interest of Punjab.”(Parkash Singh) Badal who should have taken interest in the overall development of the state was busy in promoting his family’s interest. Congress has also ignored the interest of Punjab. “While AAP which promised the moon to people did the opposite of what it promised. I was not given any fund, political power and it ignored the interest of the volunteers,””It is essential for Punjab to have a regional party which can take care of the interests of Punjab. Several regional parties in other states are already performing well,” Chhotepur said, adding the outfit will soon announce its district presidents and state committee. On queries about tie-up with Navjot Singh Sidhu-led Awaaz-e-Punjab, Chhotepur said he will welcome the former cricketer turned politician if he wanted to have an alliance with him.”Many people are in contact with us to work and Punjab Progressive Alliance will be set up to jointly fight elections in all 117 seats,” he said. He said suspended AAP MP Dharamvira Gandhi has also given his “blessings” to him. While submitting his resignation, Chhotepur accused party’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal of not trusting him and not giving him any functional authority to run the party in Punjab. Chhotepur was sacked as state convener on August 26 after a video clip surfaced allegedly showing him taking bribe in exchange for poll tickets in a purported sting operation. After his sacking, AAP had constituted a two-member probe panel comprising Jarnail Singh, party’s co-convenor in Punjab and head of administrative and grievance cell Jasbir Singh Bir to look into the allegations of bribe against Chhotepur. But Chhotepur never appeared before the panel.

Her husband, a three-time Lok Sabha member, was recently nominated by the Modi government to Rajya Sabha and he took oath as the first-time member of the Upper House on Thursday.Kaur was in Ludhiana to meet the parents of 25-year-old Inderpal Singh Ahuja, who had allegedly committed suicide due to alleged police torture and harassment here on Friday. Punjab polls – Fight drug nexus between govt, police and drug peddlers after coming to power: Rahul Gandhi to Amarinder Singh

Maintain that there exists a ‘triangle’ ‘a nexus of the government, police and drug peddlers’ in the state, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday asked Capt Amarinder Singh to fight this nexus on priority after forming the government in the state. “There is a triangle, a nexus of the government, police and drug peddlers. I would like to say to Amarinder Singhji that when your government comes to power, your first job should be to fight this nexus,” Gandhi told Congress’ chief ministerial candidate for the Punjab Assembly polls Amarinder Singh, who was also present at the event. <!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Speaking after the screening of a documentary ‘Burning Punjab’ here, the Congress vice-president said drugs was a big problem in the state and recapitulated his earlier remark that around 70 percent of Punjab youth were drug addicts. “When I said that, I was mocked, and Badal ji (in apparent reference to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal) contested my claim, saying it was not 70 percent) he said, adding, ‘the question is not of the percent of drugs abuse, the question is Punjab’s youth have lost their path, of which drugs abuse is a symptom.”Stating that there are other symptoms too, he added, “The youth in Haryana are able to get jobs, which is not the case in Punjab. If you don?t give a positive dream to the youth of Punjab, if you don’t show them a golden future, they will resort to things like drugs,” he said. Taking a dig at the Punjab Government over the increasing drug menace in the state, Gandhi said, “I have a complaint with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government: when the entire Punjab was telling you that drug addiction was a problem, you should have listened that. But your statement that there was no drug problem in Punjab; it shows that you are not listening and understanding the voice and soul of Punjab.Calling upon the people of Punjab to join the fight against drugs abuse, he said drugs eradication from Punjab should not be a fight of the Congress Party only, and asked everybody to join hands together in this quest.

Akali Dal have no moral right to rule Punjab, says Arvind Kejriwal

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Convener Arvind Kejriwal on Friday alleged that the SAD-BJP government in Punjab has “lost moral right” to continue as it has “miserably failed” in providing basic amenities like safe drinking water to the people of the state.”After so many years of independence villages in Punjab are still deprived of drinking water,” Kejriwal said on the second day of his five-day Punjab tour, at Teja Ruhela village. He “assured” availability of drinking water to all villages in Punjab within one month if AAP voted to power in the 2017 assembly poll.<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>”I have found that several villages of Punjab are still deprived of the safe drinking water as a result most of the families of the area were affected by the water-borne diseases,” Kejriwal said. “If a state government fails to provide even drinking water to people, it has no moral right to continue in power”, the Delhi Chief Minister said adding that AAP Government took it a priority to provide safe drinking water to all the citizens of Delhi. He also lambasted the Punjab government for its alleged failure to check drug menace, unemployment and adequate compensation to farmers who lost their crops and committed suicides under debt.Shocked over such a “worse condition”, Kejriwal said “I assure you, once AAP voted to power, within one month we will ensure safe drinking water in all these villages”. “No state government so far, be it of SAD-BJP or Congress, ever gave any heed to the villagers ‘cry’ for drinking water,” he said. Kejriwal lashed out at the Akali government for “contamination” of water due to use of insecticides and pesticides. He rued that instead of providing them drinking water, authorities just printed the walls with warning “groundwater is unfit for human consumption”. “The state in which villages are deprived of basic drinking water could never be tagged as ‘developed'”, he said while taking a dig at Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for his repeated claim on development of Punjab in the last nine years.”I have not seen such a bad situation in my entire life,” Kejriwal said after listening to plight of villagers living in villages of the border. “Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal claims of development, this is the development he has brought? he quipped.Among others who addressed the villagers include, State Convener of AAP, Sucha Singh Chhotepur and Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann. Kejriwal assured government job to the next of kin of Bheem Tank s family who was murdered last year. The state in past had experienced many hardships and reverses, but the government reacted with silence or with mere sympathy but never tried to listen to the grievances of the sufferer, he alleged. “The family of Tank showed a picture in which something is written in blood on Tank s shoe, which itself was a biggest proof of the incident but Police was sitting quiet, no action was taken”, he alleged.Referring to Tank’s murder, Kejriwal said “many such incidents are occurring and will continue to take place if public would not wake up and it is time to seek justice and fight for your rights and vote the deserving candidate.”

Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal bats for arming BSF, police with modern weaponry

In the wake of the recent terrorist attack on Pathankot IAF base, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Thursday advocated equipping the Border Security Force (BSF) and the state police with advanced weapons and gadgets.Punjab is a border state and hence more prone to cross-border attacks. The recent Pathankot and Dinanagar attacks are testimony to it, he said. It’s the need of the hour to provide ultra-modern gadgets and weapons to the state forces and BSF to check terrorism, he argued.<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>”The government of India must treat Punjab at par with the north eastern states and allocate liberal funds to modernise the state Police,” Badal added.Badal didn’t agree with J-K Governor N N Vohra’s suggestion on Tuesday that a separate Ministry be created out of the Home Ministry to handle security related issues.”The state police should be well-equipped on pattern of north eastern states for dealing with internal problems while BSF deployment be increased on J-K pattern for checking infiltration into Punjab from across the border,” he said. He said Punjab is fighting the country s war against drug, though not a single ounce is produced in the state. The state lies on the transit route of drug supply and is battling hard to act as a “barrier” to save the country from poison of drugs, Badal said. Claiming that the state government has been able to cut off the supply line to a large extent, Badal said the Punjab police has put the peddlers behind the bars. On Khadoor Sahib by-poll, the Chief Minister said the SAD-BJP alliance was fully prepared for it and people would repose faith in them.Earlier, addressing the gathering, Badal alleged that forces inimical to the progress of the state were bent on disturbing its hard-earned peace. However, SAD-BJP alliance would not allow these forces to succeed, he said. “We are committed to following the footsteps of our great Sikh gurus to protect peace, communal harmony and brotherhood in the state,” added Badal. He also announced that Rs 300 crore will be spent this year for providing canal water for irrigation in Doaba region.

Tamil Nadu makes it to New York Times’ list of must-visit places in 2016!

This is not the first time that Tamil Nadu has found itself on such a list. Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, was named among the top 10 cities to visit in 2015, according to Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2015. The Lonely Planet guide in its profile of the city had stated, “Chennai has long been seen as a stepping-stone to other parts of India. But with the opening of the Chennai Metro Rail, the capital of Tamil Nadu plans to raise its profile. If nothing else, fast and frequent air-conditioned trains will transform the experience of exploring this humid metropolis. And there’s plenty to see: statue-covered Dravidian temples, fascinating museums, British-era fortifications and churches, a 3km-long beach, and India’s second-largest movie industry, ‘Kollywood’.”
