Plan for universal coverage of Aadhaar hits speed-breaker in November, December

Aadhaar can be used for authentication, eKYC, seeding with other databases, elimination of ghost beneficiaries and de-duplication. It will also help stop pilferage and ensure targeted delivery of pensions and social security transfers. The Supreme Court has extended the voluntary use of the Aadhaar card to the MGNREGA, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, pension and provident fund schemes apart from the public distribution system and LPG subsidy.

“It is evident from the reply that the principal has reconstituted the Internal Complaints Committee (Sexual Harassment Committee) on the basis of his own allegations in his case. Upon perusal of documents submitted by the Department of Higher Education, it appears that Pavitra’s husband’s fears that the principal has reconstituted the ICC to pressurise the witnesses and destroy the evidence may have some basis,” the notice said.

Taslima Nasreen says writers should have absolute freedom, Sudheendra Kulkarni disagrees

“We should neither exaggerate nor belittle the incidents of intolerance. We should never politicise this debate making it out as if it is between political parties. It is not that intolerance has begun in May 2014.” Last year, a debate over the “growing climate of intolerance” saw over 40 writers and artistes returning their awards in protest against the killings of rationalists and writers and the Dadri lynching incident. “A certain kind of intolerance, marginal, has always been there in our society, so let’s not blame this party or that party. It is only that the perpetrators have felt emboldened with the coming to the power of the BJP,” Kulkarni said.

The fate of the odd-even vehicle scheme will be decided on January 11 by the Delhi High Court which had yesterday reserved its order on various pleas challenging the AAP government’s ambitious pilot project which will continue till then.
