On Sunday a boat ferrying around 60 guests from Naigaon to Panju island capsized at Naigaon jetty. While one person has been reported to be drowned, 11 others were left injured in the incident. The ferry service providers, in the region, do not use life jackets which had become a risky affair for the commuters.Ramchandra Mhatre, a resident of Umelman in Vasai, along with other guests took a ferry boat from Naigaon jetty to Panju jetty, an island village near Vasai creek. As the load increased on the boat, it capsized and Mhatre could not resurface the water. The rest of the passengers were helped by the locals and the fire brigade department. “As soon as we were informed, we had rushed to the spot and rescued the passengers while locals had already helped the people. It was due to locals and fire brigade department that major accident was averted,” said Bhosale.
