Whoever planted the idea of demonetization didn’t know elementary economics: Chidambaram

<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>Terming demonetization a “monumental tragedy” and an “anti-poor” measure, former Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said whoever planted the idea should enrol in an undergraduate course in economics.”I don’t think demonetization is a reform. It is a monumental tragedy which is anti-poor and has put millions in misery and hardships,” he said at an event at the Mumbai University. By demonetization, the Modi government created a myth that all cash is black money and all black money is cash, he said. Stating that the government did not know, either before November 8 or afterwards, the estimate of the black money in the system, Chidambaram said it is akin to a surgeon carrying out an operation without doing homework.”It is like a surgeon operating upon a patient without knowing whether the patient has any disease at all, which part of the patient is affected and what kind of surgery is required,” the former minister said.Asserting that all cash is not black money, the senior Congress leader said black money is the income that has evaded tax, and there are large sections of the people who have cash but who do not evade income tax.Agricultural income is not subject to taxation, income of charities is exempted, as is the income of religious trusts. Also, the people of Northeastern states do not have to pay income tax and they have cash in hand, he said. “Is that all black money? Is the money in the hands of farmer black money?” he asked. “I think whoever planted the idea of demonetization did not know elementary economics. He should be asked to enrol in an undergraduate school of economics,” Chidambaram quipped. If a farmer has some cash in hand, it is not black money, but when he pays, say, Rs 1,000 as fees to a doctor or a lawyer and does not get a receipt, then this Rs 1,000 becomes black money, Chidambaram said. But if the doctor or lawyer goes to a restaurant and buys a meal and the restaurateur gives him a bill for Rs 1,000, then the same Rs 1,000 note again turns ‘white’, he said. “People who did not understand the elementary economics have authored demonetization,” he said, adding that all the Rs 15.44 trillion of banned notes will come bank to banks by December 30. Demonetization was the worst thing that could have happened to the economy as it crippled the farmers, self-employed, small businessmen and daily wage earners. “It is an unmitigated tragedy…certainly has nothing to do with economic reform,” he said. Demonetization is generally resorted to only in two circumstances, Chidambaram said. “One, when there is hyper inflation…you demonetize your currency because it is worthless. Secondly, when there is currency instability and to bring about stability, you demonetize,” he said.”We are in the distinguished company of Zimbabwe, North Korea, Libya and now Venezuela (which demonetized currency). Do you want India to be in the company of these countries?” he asked. As long as there is demand for black money, it will be generated, he said. “demonetization is no answer for black money. The answer is to stamp out corruption, stamp out the sources which generate black money,” Chidambaram said. The sectors which demand black money are construction, jewellery, licensing and permission granting, he added.

KABUL Hardline cleric Mullah Haibatullah Akundzada has reinforced his position as the new leader of the Afghan Taliban by winning the support of two senior members, the insurgent group said on Saturday.Former Taliban interior minister Mullah Abdul Razaq Akhund and Mullah Abdul Sata Akhund “pledged their full support” to Akundzada during a meeting of Taliban scholars at an undisclosed location on Friday, the group said on its website. Akundzada in May replaced former Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Akhtar Mansour who was killed by a U.S. drone strike.

Senior members of the insurgent group hope Akundzada will be able to bring disparate factions together and repair the splits that emerged last year when Mansour was appointed.Afghan security forces have struggled to hold off resurgent Taliban fighters, who are estimated to control more territory in Afghanistan than at any time since 2001 when the U.S. invaded.

FRANKFURT Thyssenkrupp executives left open the possibility on Thursday that the German industrial group could keep the majority in any new entity formed by a merger of its European steel operations with those of a competitor.”The most important thing for us is that by a consolidation and by the underlying plan we can address the issues of overcapacity,” Chief Finance Officer Guido Kerkhoff told analysts on a conference call.”We have never stated consolidation, non-consolidation or discussed percentages and we don’t do that today either.”

He added that an initial public offering of the business without a merger would offer no solution to the underlying overcapacity issue.

Indian national arrested in Zimbabwe absolved of all charges

The Indian national who was arrested for alleged rape in Zimbabwe, has been absolved of all charges and released with immediate effect by the High Court there, his company claimed on Wednesday. The second-string Indian cricket team’s tour of Zimbabwe was struck by a controversy last Sunday after it emerged that two men have been arrested on charges of rape even as the officials confirmed that none of the Indian cricketer was involved in the incident.<!– /11440465/Dna_Article_Middle_300x250_BTF –>One of the two arrested persons is an official associated with one of the sponsors of the series. “The High Court Judge at Harare Justice Mawadze, Zimbabwe, after considering merits of the case found no reason to continue to hold the Consultant of ITeamWorks, in custody for an alleged crime, and released him with immediate effect,” the company said in a statement. It added, “The accused, being represented by Dumisani Mthombeni and Hon Jonathan Samukange, claimed innocence and judiciary release was based on the support, cooperation and evidence presented by the accused parties.” The storm erupted after the Zimbabwean media reported that an unnamed Indian cricketer had been arrested on charges of rape. The reports stated that India’s ambassador to the African nation, R Masakui, had tried to prevent the player’s arrest at a Harare hotel. However, Masakui outrightly rejected the media speculation by clarifying that the people arrested were not associated with the Indian cricket squad, which is currently engaged in a limited-overs series against Zimbabwe. The BCCI had also stepped in to clarify that none of its players or officials were involved in the alleged incident.

Indian national arrested in Zimbabwe for rape not associated with cricket team: MEA

Amid floating media reports that a member of the Indian cricket contingent has been arrested on charges of rape in Harare, Zimbabwe, sources in the Ministry of External Affairs refuted the claims and said that the Indian national who was arrested is no way associated with the Indian cricket team, reported CNN-News 18.

According to the ANI, the person arrested is an Indian affiliate with one of the sponsors of the matches, has been arrested on allegations of raping a local woman. The agency also reported that the accused has claimed to be innocent and has agreed to cooperate with the probe and undergo DNA tests.

Official sources in India stated that the person arrested was in fact affiliated to one of the sponsors of the ongoing limited-overs series.

“Regarding media reports of an Indian cricketer being involved in an alleged case of rape in Harare, we have spoken to our Ambassador to Zimbabwe. The report is totally false. No Indian cricketer is involved,” the sources said.

The BCCI, on its part, refused to comment, claiming that it is yet to ascertain the exact facts of the issue. “We are keeping a close watch on the development. It is a serious issue. Being aware of the sensitive nature of the issue, the BCCI won’t make comments without ascertaining facts,” said a top Board official on condition of anonymity.

Earlier on Saturday, media reports emerged that an Indian cricketer was arrested on rape charges in Harare. A Zimbabwe news portal, New Zimbabwe quoted police spokesperson assistant commissioner Charity Charamba as saying “There are allegations of rape against an Indian national by a Zimbabwe woman.”

The Zimbabwe news agency also reported the presence of Indian ambassador at The Meikles Hotel, where the Indian cricket team is currently staying, to thwart the “un-named player’s arrest”. The reporter further said that attempts were made to broker an out of court settlement with the woman.

The reports were picked up by Pakistan media as well. The reports also stated that India’s ambassador to the African nation, R Masakui, had tried to prevent the player’s arrest last night at a Harare hotel.

Further details on the case are awaited.

Supreme Court concedes error in its verdict on SC/ST staff promotions

The AG said that the SC/ST employees of the particular class can get reservation in promotion, though in the previous paragraph of the judgement, the court had reiterated that “there is no reservation in promotion by selection in Group-A posts which carry an ultimate salary of Rs 5,700 per month and in such cases it is only the concession that applies.” The apex court had on January 9 last year ruled that the Constitution enabled government to provide for reservation of SC/ST category employees even in promotions but courts cannot direct them to make such a provision.
