Social media and internet lovers rejoice!
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has decided to back net neutrality in India and has barred differential pricing of data products, such as Facebook’s Free Basics and Airtel Zero.
“No service provider shall offer or charge discriminatory tariffs for data services on basis of content,” said TRAI in a press conference. This basically means that there will no longer be any subsidised data packages offering selective services, and most services will be equal.
TRAI has given service providers six months to comply with this.
